Gearbox and diff rebuilds in Darwin

In-house at our Winnellie workshop

Manual gearbox and diff rebuilds

Noisy gearbox, jumping out of gear, or a whining diff? Our workshop rebuilds manual transmissions and differentials in-house for 4x4s and commercials, so you deal with one team from diagnosis to handover.

A rebuild can be a cheaper option than a replacement unit. Where a rebuild doesn't stack up, we can supply a used or reconditioned gearbox or diff from our Winnellie stock or our network of 300+ wrecking yards across Australia.

Signs it needs looking at

Jumping out of gear

The lever pops back to neutral, often on and off the throttle.

Crunching shifts

Grinding going into gear usually points to worn synchros.

Whining or howling

A diff or gearbox that's louder than it used to be.

Leaks and clunks

Oil on the housing, or a clunk when you take up drive.

What a rebuild covers

Not sure what's wrong yet? Our gearbox repairs and diff repairs pages cover diagnosis and smaller fixes.

Rebuild or replace?

If a rebuild doesn't make sense, we can supply a used or reconditioned gearbox or diff and fit it.

Manual gearbox rebuilds

Most manual gearbox problems come down to worn bearings, synchros and seals. A rebuild replaces the worn parts and keeps the box that's already matched to your engine, bellhousing and transfer case.

We see a lot of the common 4x4 manuals, like Toyota's R151F and H151F and Nissan's FS5R30A and FS5W71C, along with the boxes in Tritons, Rangers, BT-50s and D-Maxes. Older gearboxes are where a rebuild makes the most sense, because good used units are getting hard to find.

Rebuild or replace?

If the casing is cracked, the gears are badly damaged or the parts aren't available, a used or reconditioned gearbox can be the better buy. We'll tell you which way we'd go and why.

Diff rebuilds

A diff that whines, howls or clunks usually has worn bearings or a crown wheel and pinion that's out of adjustment. A rebuild replaces the bearings and seals and sets the gears up to spec so it runs quiet again.

While a diff is apart is the best time to change ratios or fit a locker. See locking differentials. If water has got in after a creek crossing, we'll also look at fitting a diff breather kit so it doesn't happen again.
